Working in Administrator Windows

Some jobs need the AI Employee to type and click in windows that Windows protects: Windows Security sign-in prompts, and programs that were started with Run as administrator. Windows stops an ordinary program from typing or clicking in those windows, so the AI Employee needs permission to work in them.

If your jobs never work in those windows, you don’t need to change anything.

  • Run as administrator - Right-click the AI Employee and choose Run as administrator. This is the quickest way, but a program running as administrator can’t see some of the shared and cloud drives the signed-in user can (for example, Egnyte). Jobs that open files on those drives then fail.
  • Install it in Program Files - The AI Employee can type into administrator windows without running as administrator, and it keeps access to every drive the signed-in user can see. Use this when your jobs need both.

You need a Windows account with administrator rights to copy files into Program Files.

  1. Close the AI Employee, and any Chrome windows it opened.

  2. Create a folder called ProcessProxy inside C:\Program Files. Windows asks an administrator to approve this.

  3. Copy processproxy.exe and chromedriver.exe from the folder where the AI Employee is installed now into C:\Program Files\ProcessProxy.

  4. An AI Employee in Program Files looks for your settings, including your AI Employee API key, and its website sign-ins in D:\ProcessProxy, or C:\ProcessProxy on a computer without a D drive. If the AI Employee is installed in that folder now, skip this step. Otherwise, create that folder and copy everything except processproxy.exe from the AI Employee’s current folder into it.

  5. Open your Startup folder: press the Windows key and R together, type shell:startup, and press Enter. Delete the AI Agent Robot shortcut.

  6. Open C:\Program Files\ProcessProxy and double-click processproxy.exe. Don’t choose Run as administrator. The AI Employee adds a new startup shortcut that points to this copy, so it starts from here from now on.

  7. Check the Monitoring Log for this line:

Can Type Into Administrator Windows | Yes, Installed In Program Files

If the AI Employee asks for its API key, its settings aren’t in the folder from step 4. Paste the key on the Settings tab, and sign in again to the websites your jobs use.

If the log shows Can Type Into Administrator Windows | No instead, the AI Employee isn’t running from C:\Program Files. Check that you started the copy in C:\Program Files\ProcessProxy, and that the startup shortcut points there.

Always start the AI Employee from its startup shortcut, or by double-clicking it. When a batch file, a scheduled task, or another program starts it directly instead, Windows can refuse to start it and show the message The requested operation requires elevation.

The AI Employee can’t write into Program Files on its own, so an administrator finishes each update.

  1. On the Tools tab, click Download AI Employee Update. The update is saved to D:\ProcessProxy, or to C:\ProcessProxy on a computer without a D drive.
  2. Close the AI Employee.
  3. As an administrator, extract processproxy.exe from the downloaded processproxy.zip into C:\Program Files\ProcessProxy, replacing the one already there.
  4. Start the AI Employee from its startup shortcut.

The Monitoring Log lists these steps too, with the folders on that computer.

Updating the Chrome driver in Program Files

Section titled “Updating the Chrome driver in Program Files”

An AI Employee installed in Program Files uses the chromedriver.exe in C:\Program Files\ProcessProxy, which only an administrator can change. This keeps the program it uses to control Chrome out of reach of anything else running on the computer. When Chrome updates itself and browser steps start failing, update the driver:

  1. On the Tools tab, click Download Chromedriver Update. The new driver is saved to D:\ProcessProxy, or to C:\ProcessProxy on a computer without a D drive, and the Monitoring Log says where.
  2. As an administrator, copy that chromedriver.exe into C:\Program Files\ProcessProxy, replacing the one already there.
